Tubu-Tubu Activity

In 1982, Yumiko encountered traditional grains.

The activities of Tubu-Tubu started when Tubu-Tubu Food Designer Yumiko (Otani) encountered “zakkoku” (Japanese traditional grains) and started to practice and search for “Tubu-Tubu Future Food,” the diet, which suits the structure of life. Since she was a child Tubu-Tubu Food Designer Yumiko has lived her life having questions and thoughts in her chest about “Who am I?” and “How does the world work?” “How can we realize a peaceful world where there are no contradictions?” “What is the purpose for living?” “I want to live a lively shining life making best of the limited time we have for life!” And She has found answers to these questions by getting the solid health of mind and body through changing her diet as well as working on changing her consciousness.

In 1983 we started to make action.

In 1983 we opened a weekend only restaurant and ingredient shop and started cooking seminars. Today the restaurant has grown into the “Tubu-Tubu Café” where Tubu-Tubu sweets are very popular. In 1995 we started to build “Atelier of Life.” There we work on studying the techniques of growing and manufacturing traditional grains as well as passing down the seeds.

In 1995 we started to appeal Life Seed Campaign.

In 1995 we founded the people’s network International Life & Food Association, Ilfa. Ilfa is named from the first letters of International Life & Food Association. In the same year we published “Mirai-shoku (Future Food. Skills of Energy Cooking for Surviving in the Era of Environmental Pollution.” In 1996 started Tubu-Tubu Future Food Seminars. In 2009 we changed the name from Ilfa to Tubu-Tubu and started the Tennyo Seminars. We are aiming to open other venues nationwide as the base of enlightening and spreading new delicious cuisine, which offers health just by eating.

In 2013 “Be the New You” became our basic philosophy.

In 2013 we made a decision to have “Be the New You!” as the principal theme for our activities. On August 8th we entirely renewed the Tubu-Tubu website. In addition to Tennyo Seminars developed from Tubu-Tubu Future Food Seminars, we completed the program for Future Creation Seminars - Easy child rearing up to age seven. We are running varieties of seminars and events to support people’s change of diet and consciousness. In December we started the free broadcast Tubu-Tubu Internet Radio, Be the New You! on every Saturday. In spring and summer, 2014 we held the Onna-Biraki Seminar (Open Self Seminar for Women) and it aroused a storm of awakening in many people.

1. The study and practice of value systems and lifestyles, which suit lives.

We are living in the era of a big shift from the value system of attaching excessive importance to a material civilization to the sense of value of cherishing life. The world is about to transform from men’s theory of living to the women’s theory of living.

The base for our activities is study, practice, and publicizing the information of the art of the ecological diet, Tubu-Tubu Future Food. Tubu-Tubu Future Food is a diet in which you can enjoy cooking Japanese traditional food ingredients, zakkoku (traditional grains). These grains heighten the vitality of the body and the earth and awaken femininity following the rule of life, while you enjoy eating delicious food. We are teaching a new sense of value which suits the structure of life backed by practical lifestyle skills suggesting a 100 % plant-based, non-sugar, delicious food and sweets made of traditional grains and vegetables as the core.

2. Managing the seminar for supporting “Be the New You!”

I want to change! I want to live freely in a way that suits me! I want to live a different way of life from now! I want to live shining! Many people, especially many women have these feeling flowing from the inside. In order for their wish to come true it is necessary to have information and wisdom which is completely different from before. Tubu-Tubu offers varieties of opportunities to learn with the following seminars as the base: The learning step for finding “the new you” by changing your diet is the Future Food Seminar, the learning step for creating “the new you” by changing the consciousness is the Tennyo Seminar, and returning over “a new family” through raising child is the Future Creation Seminar, Easy child rearing.

3. Tubu-Tubu Tennyo Flower Garden Project

“Tubu-Tubu Tennyo” are women Yumiko has named who practice Tubu-Tubu Future Food and learn about the real being of the world through the Tennyo Seminar. They awaken and start to live with self-direction. When the women who raise life and dream peace connect with cutting edge life science they open the windows of the life universe, the kitchen. They resonate with each other for the new creation and the world undergoes transformation. Women should become the first life scientists. They should look at life through their life creation of childbirth, childcare and cooking, recall the rule of life and transform humanity. This will become the bridge to the future. Tennyo’s flower gardens have been created by each woman blooming as one flower, a “Tubu-Tubu Tennyo.” We are actively dreaming and working to embrace the entire earth someday. Yumiko has certified Tubu-Tubu Tennyo who have decided to pursue Tubu-Tubu as their calling as Tubu-Tubu Mothers. She has been enjoying working with them for our dream.

6. International research and exchange activities

In 1998 we started to develop a relationship with the India National Traditional Grain Institute through South India traditional grain research tour. In 2000 we held the “International Traditional Grain Food Symposium” sponsored by Ilfa. Supported by the Japanese ministries of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Welfare the Symposium invited the guests from Swaminatan Laboratory in India, which campaigns diversifying crops and Seed of Survival Project in Ethiopia as well as appealing to the groups and individuals who are working on reforming changing diet, agriculture, and life around Japan. We published the report “Zakkoku ga mirai o tsukuru” (Traditional grains will make the future.)” We developed relationships with the Cotacachi City (Food Culture of the Andes) in Ecuador. We also participated in an Asia regional conference for a crop diversification promotion project in October, 2001, the Brazil International Convention in 2002, Slow Food International Convention in Italy in 2004, and the Traditional Grain Festival in Korea. In 2009 we gave a lecture at “International conference for increasing the ability of spontaneous cure of mind and body in Korea” and carried out Korea and Japan traditional grains exchange tours.

7. Life Seed Campaign

Tubu-Tubu has been running a “Life Seed Campaign” since 1995 calling out to people “Let’s pass down the Life Seeds, the seeds of traditional grains!” We have been sharing the seeds and enlightening people about how to cultivate them. We emphasize the development of producers and we also have been continuing an all-quantity buyback campaign of purchasing traditional grains of non-agrochemical culturing. We connect the growers and buyers of traditional grains with trust through the traditional grain periodical delivery service system. Reviving traditional grains (Tubu-Tubu is their nickname) to the table is a big key to realizing a diet in harmony with the environment. Traditional grains are nutritionally well-balanced. The native species can be cultivated in mountainous, cold or dry areas and does not deplete much of the soil fertility. In order for Japan (where the grain self supporting ratio is less than 30%) to survive it will take real power of passing down the “seeds” of delicious traditional grains. These grains do not require paddy fields or pesticides and are suited to the Japanese climate. In addition “the skills for cultivating grains” and “the techniques for diet” will also take real power and have to be learned and practiced. Today most of the vegetables and even rice became F1 hybrids, which cannot pass down their seeds and it is becoming impossible for us to grow crops without buying seeds every year. Taking this reality into consideration means the Japanese self-sufficiency rate is much lower. We can easily avoid the food crisis as well as the health crisis if each of us passes down the seeds of traditional grains together with the food culture. These grains can provide the main food supply for one year even in the mountains. And this is possible through our traditional grain periodical delivery service system.

8. Atelier of Life & Tubu-Tubu Farm

Atelier of Life is our base of living for Tubu-Tubu Food Designer Yumiko and her family. It is located in Oguni-cho in Yamagata prefecture. In 1996 Yumiko and her family built a half owner built ecology house made with 100% domestic timber, which is three stories high and about 190 square yards. She named the house an “ecology house” and the field of 4.9 acres ”Atelier of Life” as a place for creating future diet and life. Ours is a passive solar house with a well-lighted glass greenhouse on the south side. The farm that we developed little by little spread to 30 acres on the west side and east side. We adopted non-tillage cultivation for our farm and we grow vegetables for ourselves. The large land on the east became a seven-color traditional grain farm so that we could publicly call it the Tubu-Tubu Farm. We also have the base Tubu-Tubu farm for the Tubu-Tubu growers network. The network helps spread the circle of those who grow traditional grains. Atelier of Life is a magnificent space surrounded by mountains where no other houses can be seen. We welcome Tubu-Tubu members to experience lodging and lodging while joining in the work. At New Year’s and summer we hold “an open house for experiencing all of our life as a big family at Atelier.” Enjoy and learn from the lifestyle and it can become your calling. Atelier of Life is a place that suggests such a lifestyle, helps pursue the possibilities, and offers a place to practice and have unique experiences.
